Africa is increasingly being positioned as a critical force in the future of the global artificial intelligence (AI) economy, with industry leaders arguing that its importance goes far beyond data and software innovation.
Speaking at the UNLEASH Global Business Conference 2026, held at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg Center, Dr. Elizabeth Jack-Rich, Chief Executive Officer of ELIN Group, emphasized a shift in how AI should be understood globally.
According to her, the common perception of AI as purely a software-driven field is incomplete. She argued that the technology is deeply rooted in physical systems—relying heavily on energy supply, computing infrastructure, and essential raw materials such as copper and rare earth elements. These foundational components, she noted, are what truly enable AI systems to function and scale.
This perspective places Africa in a unique position. While the continent is already known for its vast natural resources, Jack-Rich highlighted that its real opportunity lies in developing full-scale industrial ecosystems. Rather than remaining a supplier of raw materials, Africa could gain significantly by building capacity across the entire production chain—spanning extraction, processing, logistics, power generation, and transportation.
She further explained that the coming decade will favor businesses operating within Africa that can integrate these sectors efficiently and collaborate competitively with international investors. This approach, she said, is central to the strategy of ELIN Group, which is focused on establishing infrastructure and operational systems that support the global AI economy.
The conference, themed “Building for What’s Next,” gathered global business leaders, policymakers, and emerging professionals to discuss innovation, leadership, and economic resilience. During a panel session on leadership in times of disruption, Jack-Rich joined figures such as Denise Fall and Tolani Alli to explore how leadership is adapting to shifting global dynamics.
Participants described the discussions as forward-thinking, particularly in addressing sustainability challenges and economic uncertainty. Jack-Rich reaffirmed her commitment to ensuring that Africa plays a defining role in shaping the next phase of global technological and economic development.
