In a major move to bolster local commerce, Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) has awarded ₦250 million in financial support to 51 emerging business owners. The disbursement marks the conclusion of the 2026 Vocational Innovation and Business Empowerment Scheme (VIBES), a flagship initiative focused on driving economic resilience within the company’s host territories in Rivers State.
The selection process culminated in a high-stakes “pitch-a-thon,” where aspiring entrepreneurs defended their commercial models before a professional jury. The winners were selected based on three primary criteria:
-
Feasibility: The practical potential of the business to operate successfully.
-
Scalability: The capacity of the venture to grow and expand over time.
-
Sustainability: The ability to remain profitable and impactful in the long run.
Bridging the Capital Gap
Sophia Horsfall, NLNG’s General Manager for External Relations and Sustainable Development, emphasized that the grant is more than just a donation; it is a bridge. She highlighted a common challenge in the Nigerian entrepreneurial space: many founders possess the technical skills and training but lack the liquid assets required to launch or scale their operations.
By providing these non-repayable grants, NLNG aims to:
-
Eliminate entry barriers for small-scale industries.
-
Provide a safety net for businesses to stabilize their early-stage operations.
-
Encourage local job creation by empowering community members to become employers.
Long-Term Community Impact
The VIBES program represents a shift from traditional corporate social responsibility toward sustainable economic empowerment. Rather than temporary relief, the initiative seeks to foster a self-sufficient business class in Rivers State.
Horsfall noted that these funds are strategically intended to transition beneficiaries from “trainees” to “active market players,” ensuring that the knowledge gained during the VIBES sessions is translated into tangible economic activity that benefits the wider community.
