The Lagos State Government, through the Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA), has empowered 78 entrepreneurs with disabilities by providing them with seed funding and essential work tools to boost their businesses.
This initiative is designed to break economic barriers for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the state, ensuring they achieve financial independence and contribute meaningfully to society.
Empowering PWDs Beyond Financial Aid
Speaking at the Financing and Upskilling Project for Entrepreneurs with Disabilities, held at the STO Resource Centre, Alausa, Ikeja, the General Manager of LASODA, Mrs. Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, emphasized that the empowerment program is a major step toward fostering economic self-sufficiency among PWDs.
“This initiative ensures that persons with disabilities are not just passive recipients of assistance but active contributors to the economic growth of Lagos State,” she stated.
She highlighted the government’s commitment under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Plus Agenda to promoting inclusivity, accessibility, and equal opportunities for all citizens.
“Today’s project reflects Lagos State’s dedication to ensuring that PWDs are not left behind. We are providing financial aid to support businesses owned by PWDs, as well as parents of children with disabilities whose businesses have suffered setbacks. Different sums are allocated based on the nature of the businesses to transform their economic situations and reduce dependency on the state.”
Oyetunde-Lawal added that the initiative is not just about financial support but also about capacity building, entrepreneurship development, and business sustainability, equipping PWDs with the skills and resources needed to run profitable enterprises.
Recognizing Ability in Disability
The LASODA boss acknowledged the creativity and entrepreneurial potential of people with special needs and called on stakeholders to support efforts to eliminate discrimination and build an inclusive society where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.
She encouraged beneficiaries to remain focused and committed to their businesses while using the resources wisely to ensure continued support for others.

In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youths and Social Development, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Oke-Osanyintolu, represented by Mrs. Bukayo Odukoya, described the event as a testament to the state’s commitment to an equitable and prosperous society where everyone has access to development opportunities.
She reiterated the government’s resolve to continuously support PWDs while calling for private sector collaboration to further strengthen inclusive economic initiatives.
