In a major bid to resolve the chronic equipment deficits and high capital costs crippling domestic airline operators, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has endorsed a comprehensive “360-degree engagement” proposal from European aerospace giant Airbus.
The bilateral agreement was finalized during high-level negotiations on the sidelines of the Africa CEO Forum in Kigali, Rwanda, between the President and an Airbus delegation led by Thierry Cloutet, Head of Regional Business Growth for Africa and the Middle East.
Overcoming Airline Liquidity Constraints A central pillar of the newly approved framework is the establishment of a dedicated Nigerian Aircraft Leasing Company. This initiative directly fulfills a strategic roadmap announced by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, aimed at structurally shifting how local carriers manage their fleets.
Historically, Nigerian airlines have faced severe bottlenecks, including high international insurance premiums, lack of local maintenance hubs, and difficulties accessing foreign exchange to lease aircraft. The new partnership addresses these issues through targeted operational mechanisms:

Export Credit Arrangements: Structuring low-interest, government-backed financial corridors to guarantee asset purchases.

Lease Structures: Providing flexible dry-lease and wet-lease options directly within the domestic market to protect local operators from volatile currency fluctuations.

MRO Integration: Activating a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Airbus to provide technical crew training, operational advisory, and setup frameworks for local Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities.
Strengthening National Security Infrastructure Beyond commercial aviation finance, the bilateral framework directly intersects with Nigeria’s immediate defense requirements. President Tinubu used the strategic engagement to demand the accelerated delivery of three Apache attack helicopters previously ordered by the federal government.
Emphasizing that counter-terrorism and the complete elimination of security threats remain his administration’s top operational priority, the President stated that tactical military airpower must be scaled up immediately to neutralize hostile actors.
The defense component of the agreement also covers the tactical integration of the Airbus C-295 transport aircraft, alongside advanced space-technology partnerships focusing on satellite tracking and Earth observation data systems. These technologies will be deployed to optimize border surveillance, map geographical terrains, and provide real-time intelligence feeds to support ongoing internal security operations.
