The Nigerian government has ramped up its efforts to equip young Nigerians with critical skills for employment and entrepreneurship, particularly in the steel and industrial sectors.
The Ministry of Steel Development has announced the launch of a comprehensive three-batch Bootcamp Training Programme in Welding, designed to provide practical skills and technical knowledge that will directly contribute to the country’s industrial growth.
At the flag-off ceremony for the first batch in Onitsha, Anambra State, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Chris Osa Isokpunwu, highlighted that the initiative marks a significant step toward developing a highly skilled workforce, fostering industrial expansion, and promoting sustainable development within Nigeria’s steel and metallurgical sectors.
“The Ministry of Steel Development, under the leadership of Honourable Minister Prince Shaiubu Abubakar Audu, is committed to repositioning Nigeria’s steel and metals industry as a cornerstone of our economic transformation,” Dr. Isokpunwu stated.
He added that achieving this vision requires both infrastructural investment and the empowerment of human capital. The Bootcamp, he explained, was designed to bridge the skills gap in the sector, providing participants with hands-on expertise in welding, industrial foundry, metallurgy, instrumentation, system control, and mechanical maintenance.
“The goal is not just to impart knowledge but to instill discipline, resilience, and teamwork,” he emphasized. “Participants must adhere to all safety protocols and guidelines, as any form of misconduct, including indiscipline or violations, will result in immediate disqualification.”
The Ministry has also ensured that trainees are supported throughout the program with accommodation, meals, and starter packs.
Dr. Isokpunwu further encouraged the participants to view this as an opportunity to position themselves as future leaders in Nigeria’s steel and metallurgical sectors. “Embrace this training with enthusiasm, stay focused, and leverage the knowledge and experience you will gain,” he urged.
Senator Patrick Ndubueze, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Steel, commended the initiative, emphasizing its potential to empower Nigeria’s youth to become self-reliant through the acquisition of in-demand technical skills. Represented by Mr. Greg Owurmanam, Senator Ndubueze urged participants to fully engage in the program and cooperate with their trainers to maximize the learning experience.
Engr. Frederick E. Ewa, Director of Metallurgical Inspectorate, provided an overview of the Bootcamp Training Programme, describing it as a strategic move by the Ministry to equip young Nigerians with hands-on technical skills, promote industrial growth, and address the manpower gap in the steel sector.
The Bootcamp will offer intensive training in three specialized areas: Welding and Fabrication, Industrial Foundry and Metallurgy, and Instrumentation, System Control, and Mechanical Maintenance. Throughout the training, participants will gain exposure to real-world practical sessions, industry best practices, and safety protocols.
Dr. F.U. Obi, Director/Ag. Chief Executive of the Metallurgical Training Institute (MTI) in Onitsha, also spoke at the event, emphasizing that the Bootcamp represents a bold step toward building the next generation of skilled professionals and entrepreneurs who will drive the growth of Nigeria’s steel and manufacturing industries.
The MTI Onitsha, a leading institution in technical and vocational education, was selected as the venue for the Bootcamp due to its longstanding role in producing highly skilled professionals who have made significant contributions to Nigeria’s steel industry.
This Bootcamp Training Programme is a vital part of the government’s broader strategy to empower Nigerian youth and strengthen the country’s industrial capabilities, ensuring a more prosperous and self-sufficient future for the nation.
