The Federal Government of Nigeria and the Government of Japan have finalized plans to host the high-level Nigeria-Japan Special Policy Dialogue in Abuja at the end of August 2026. The diplomatic milestone was confirmed during a bilateral meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, where the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, represented by Ambassador Enikanolaiye, hosted a Japanese delegation led by Mr. Shin Honda. The upcoming summit will coincide with an official state visit by Japan’s Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs and is designed to accelerate cross-border technology transfer, unlock foreign direct investment (FDI), and harmonize bilateral trade policies.

Industrial and Infrastructure Development: The Nigerian government commended Japan’s global leadership in heavy industries, manufacturing, and technological innovation. Ambassador Enikanolaiye reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to improving its domestic business environment to attract more Japanese capital, particularly through structured collaborations facilitated by the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO).

Development Partnerships: Mr. Shin Honda reaffirmed Tokyo’s long-term commitment to Nigeria’s development priorities. Private Sector Collaboration: Beyond state-level diplomacy, both nations are prioritizing private-sector alignment. The delegation announced that prominent Nigerian business leader Alhaji Aliko Dangote is scheduled to lead a commercial trade mission to Japan later this year, a move expected to secure new investment pipelines and strengthen business-to-business (B2B) alliances between the two economies.
