A cohort of 18 Chibok girls has graduated from a federal government vocational training programme, marking a significant milestone in their journey toward economic independence and self-sufficiency.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony held in Yola, the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim, announced that 14 of the graduates were trained in tailoring, while four acquired skills in catering services. Each of the 18 graduates received a N1 million entrepreneurship grant to kick-start their businesses.
Second Batch Already in Training
The minister further revealed that a second batch of 33 Chibok girls is currently undergoing vocational training and will each receive N1 million upon graduation, along with starter packs to support their business ventures.
In addition, 12 Chibok girls who are part of the 2026 graduating class at the American University of Nigeria (AUN) will also receive N1 million each as entrepreneurship grants. Another 21 girls currently enrolled at AUN, expected to graduate in 2027, have been promised the same package.
Support for Families
Beyond the direct support to the girls, the government has extended assistance to their families. A total of 221 parents of the Chibok girls will receive N200,000 each, along with eight deep freezers, ten sewing machines, and three industrial machines to help them build sustainable livelihoods.
A Message of Purpose Over Pain
Minister Suleiman-Ibrahim urged the graduates not to let their past define their future. “Your identity is not your pain; your identity is your purpose. The world once knew your story because of a heartbreaking event. From today, let the world know you because of your excellence, your achievements, your creativity, and your contributions,” she said.
She emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring that every survivor has not only the opportunity to recover but also the platform to lead, innovate, and prosper.
Adamawa Government’s Commitment
Neido Kofulto, Commissioner of Women Affairs in Adamawa State, expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for rescuing the girls and providing them with this opportunity. She urged the beneficiaries to apply their skills seriously to secure a successful future.
Prof. Ibrahim Danjuma, Managing Director of Modibbo Adama University (MAU) Consultancy Services, congratulated the graduates and expressed hope that they would become future entrepreneurs and successful businesswomen in the country.
