A fundamental gap exists between Nigeria’s enormous youth population—over half of the country—and the structured support necessary to translate their entrepreneurial talent into formalized, scalable businesses. While young Nigerians are heavily engaged in survival entrepreneurship across retail, services, and technology, they frequently lack patient capital, structured mentorship, and the visibility needed to transition from informal “roadside” ventures to high-growth companies. The new business and investment reality program, Oya Pitch, has been strategically launched to address this critical infrastructure deficit.

Investment Beyond Exposure: The Oya Pitch Model

Oya Pitch distinguishes itself as a real-world investment platform focused on established Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) that already possess a customer base and market validation, but require significant impetus for growth. The show provides founders a direct opportunity to pitch to prominent Nigerian business leaders for actual financial backing, moving beyond mere exposure or “vibes.”

Tobi Olutayo, Chief Commercial Officer at West Power and Gas and Co-founder of Tova Studios Limited (the show’s producer), explained the motivation: “We observed that many founders were not merely experimenting; they were already operating, managing inventory, serving genuine demand, and sustaining teams. Their primary missing elements were capital access, organizational structure, mentorship, and the tools necessary for scale. We engineered this platform to consolidate all those resources.”

The belief driving the show is that by providing resilient Nigerian business builders with a professional platform, practical guidance, and a community framework, their growth trajectory will accelerate. This growth, in turn, formalizes operations, increases employment, and injects greater value throughout the national supply chain.

How the Platform Operates

Each episode centers on entrepreneurs presenting their ventures to a panel of three distinguished judges:

  • Process: Judges engage in thorough assessment, asking probing questions designed to scrutinize the business model.

  • Feedback & Tone: When a deal does not align with a judge’s portfolio, they use the familiar Nigerian phrase, “THIS ONE PASS ME,” a light-hearted, respectful exit line that ensures the founders still receive valuable, actionable critique.

Tangible Capital, Zero Strings

The integrity of Oya Pitch lies in its commitment to delivering real capital. Unlike programs focused solely on entertainment, Season 1 demonstrated immediate impact:

  • Funding: With support from sponsors like TandN Group and AJ Skylar Limited, entrepreneurs received genuine cash investments.

  • Example: The company REDD received a total of three million naira (a two-million-naira cash award plus an additional one million naira), awarded without any accompanying debt, equity requirement, or complex paperwork.

This transaction solidified the platform’s utility as a direct mechanism for injecting capital into the hands of ambitious Nigerian founders.

Targeting the Overlooked Demographic

The show deliberately targets young founders because, despite statistical adjustments that may inflate youth employment figures, the quality and sustainability of work remain critical issues. Many young people are engaged in informal self-employment or small businesses lacking growth capital, representing a vulnerable and often overlooked demographic.

The Tova Studio ecosystem, starting with Oya Pitch, aims to:

  1. Identify young founders early.

  2. Provide them with high-profile visibility.

  3. Connect them to a pipeline of serious investors.

  4. Maintain them within a supportive community for ongoing learning and collaboration.

Building an Ecosystem for Scalable Growth

Oya Pitch serves as the pilot program for Tova Studios Limited (founded by Tobi Olutayo and Adewunmi O. Babatunde), a media company specializing in premium African content formats that intersect business, technology, and culture.

The long-term ambition is to create a dynamic ecosystem that normalizes the process for an SME founder to:

  • Step onto a visible platform.

  • Receive clear, structured guidance.

  • Connect with capital and experienced mentors.

  • Achieve sustainable scale.

This integrated platform benefits all stakeholders: Entrepreneurs gain funding and visibility; investors gain a curated pipeline of de-risked, growth-ready businesses; and the economy gains SMEs capable of creating formal jobs and unlocking substantial value. Oya Pitch is positioned as an indispensable catalyst for economic transformation.
