The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has issued permits for mini-grid electricity generation to Golden Penny Power Limited, MTN Communications Nigeria Limited, Havenhill Synergy, and others. In the first quarter of 2024, NERC issued nine new off-grid generation licenses with a total capacity of 109.69 megawatts and three new trading licenses.
Golden Penny Power Limited received a license to build six off-grid gas plants in Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, and Cross River states, with a total capacity of 100MW. MTN was granted a permit to build four captive generation plants in Lagos with a capacity of 15.94MW. Other companies, including SweetCo Foods Limited and African Steel Mills Nigeria Limited, were also permitted to generate captive power.
NERC issued nine captive power generation permits in the first quarter of 2024, with a total capacity of 52.57MW. The commission also licensed several companies for mini-grid development, including Daybreak Power Solutions and TIS Renewable Energy Limited.
NERC encourages the development and utilization of renewable energy by issuing permits and registration certificates for mini-grid development. The commission certified six Meter Service Providers and issued one regulation and 36 new orders in the first quarter of 2024.
The certified meter service providers include Genobet Limited, Mojec Meter Asset Management, and Smart Meters Company Limited. The new orders include the Eligible Customer Regulations, 2024, and the Multi-Year Tariff Order 2024 for the Distribution Companies.
