Nigeria is preparing to host the 2023 edition of the West African Insurance Association (WAICA) Educational Conference, scheduled to take place from May 7 to 9, 2023, at the renowned Eko Hotel & Suites in Victoria Island, Lagos.
The Local Organising Committee (LOC), led by Mrs. Bola Odukale, has begun laying the groundwork for what promises to be a transformative event for the region’s insurance industry. Odukale emphasized that insights and takeaways from this high-level gathering are expected to equip West African underwriters with the tools and strategies needed to operate effectively on a global stage.
In her remarks during the LOC’s inaugural meeting, Odukale unveiled plans for the three-day international event, noting that it aims to spark dialogue, collaboration, and policy direction that could elevate the region’s insurance landscape.
This year’s theme, “Repositioning the Insurance Industry in West Africa for Global Competitiveness,” reflects a growing push for the industry to align with international standards and expectations. Odukale, who also serves as Deputy Chair of the Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA), stressed that the timing of this conversation is critical, particularly around the issue of performance ratings and the credibility of insurers in the global market.
“As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, it’s essential for our regional insurance industry to stand out as globally competitive,” she said. “Rating agencies play a key role in this process by assessing the capacity and reliability of insurers. To truly thrive in a global village, we must be seen as capable and forward-moving.”
The conference is expected to attract professionals from across the West African insurance ecosystem, bringing fresh perspectives and solutions to strengthen the sector’s international relevance.
