In a groundbreaking move that positions Nigeria at the forefront of global gas logistics, Temile Development Company has signed a landmark contract with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) for the construction of a state-of-the-art 88,000 cubic meter Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC)—with an option for a second.

This high-value agreement, exceeding $124 million, marks the first-ever VLGC order by an African-owned company, reinforcing Temile’s growing influence in the international energy transportation space. The ceremonial signing took place at the prestigious Dorchester Hotel in London, capturing global attention and underscoring a pivotal moment for Nigeria’s maritime ambitions.

A Game-Changer for Nigerian Gas Shipping

The vessel from HHI will be the largest panamax-beam VLGC in the world, setting a new standard in size, performance, and sustainability. It will be powered by an LPG dual-fuel main engine and equipped with a shaft generator for enhanced energy efficiency. Two deck tanks with a combined capacity of 900 cubic meters will enable seamless switching between propane and butane, ensuring greater operational flexibility.

Delivery of the first vessel is scheduled for Q1 2028, a timeline that reflects Temile’s forward-looking strategy to expand Nigeria’s footprint in global gas shipping.

Strengthening a Proudly Nigerian Fleet

Temile Development Company is 100% Nigerian-owned and managed, with a solid reputation for providing a full suite of oil and gas support services, particularly in offshore and marine logistics. The company already operates two 23,000 cbm fully refrigerated gas carriers, the LPG/C Alfred Temile and LPG/C Alfred Temile 10, which are currently on charter to NLNG and Vitol respectively.

This new VLGC order not only expands Temile’s growing fleet but also cements its place among world-class operators in the gas logistics sector.

Industry Applauds a Strategic Leap

Commenting on the development, Matt Neale of Clarksons, the project’s appointed broker, stated:

“We are delighted to support Temile Development Company Ltd in this landmark transaction. This latest contract builds on Temile’s previous successes and showcases their capability to manage and operate advanced gas carriers. It’s a significant boost to the Nigerian gas sector and a proud moment for African maritime leadership.”

A Bold Vision for Nigeria’s Maritime Future

Temile’s expansion aligns with Nigeria’s broader vision to increase its role in global LNG and LPG logistics, reduce reliance on foreign operators, and build a resilient, globally competitive energy sector.

By investing in next-generation vessels and sustainable technologies, Temile is not only enhancing its own operations but also contributing to the strengthening of Nigeria’s maritime capabilities, job creation, and skill development in the energy sector.

Looking Ahead

With this bold step, Temile Development Company has set a new benchmark for indigenous participation in the global gas shipping industry. The VLGC order is more than a business milestone—it is a symbol of Nigerian excellence, ambition, and readiness to lead on the world stage.

As 2028 approaches, all eyes will be on the delivery of this vessel and the new chapter it will usher in for Nigeria’s energy logistics.
