In a bold move to uplift small-scale businesses and improve local livelihoods, Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has disbursed a N50 million grant to support 500 petty traders in Eket Local Government Area. This empowerment initiative aligns with the state’s ARISE Agenda, which focuses on economic development and inclusive growth.
Speaking at the commissioning of a 5,000-capacity Conference Hall in Eket, the governor—represented by Frank Archibong, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs—revealed that each beneficiary would receive N100,000 to boost their trade.
“This initiative is a practical demonstration of the Arise Agenda in action at the grassroots. We are committed to transforming every local government area through projects like this,” Archibong stated.
He further emphasized the importance of putting monitoring mechanisms in place to ensure that the funds are used effectively to drive business growth and sustainability among the traders.
Empowering SMEs: A Path to Economic Growth
The event wasn’t just about economic empowerment—it also celebrated significant strides in infrastructure. The newly inaugurated Conference Hall is expected to serve as a central hub for major gatherings, conferences, and social events, further contributing to internally generated revenue (IGR) and job creation in Eket.
Eket Local Government Chairman, Mr. Akaniyene Tommey, lauded the twin accomplishments of empowerment and infrastructure development.
“This is more than a project; it is a reflection of our unwavering commitment to the prosperity and growth of our people,” Tommey said.
“With this N50 million grant, we are reinforcing our support for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), the backbone of our economy.”
Tommey also hinted at future developments, including a proposed Ultramodern Legislative Complex, which would further elevate Eket’s infrastructural profile.
Voices from the Beneficiaries
For traders like Mrs. Deborah Willie, the grant represents more than just financial assistance—it’s a gateway to stability and progress.
“I’m grateful for being selected as a beneficiary. This grant will help me expand my business and improve my family’s wellbeing,” she said.
Looking Ahead
The event concluded with a foundation stone laying ceremony for the upcoming Eket Legislative Complex, signaling yet another milestone in the ongoing transformation of the area.
Governor Eno’s administration continues to demonstrate its commitment to people-centered development, providing tools and infrastructure that empower communities and fuel long-term economic growth across Akwa Ibom.
