As part of its commitment to empowering host communities, the West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) has equipped youths in Ogun State with valuable vocational and entrepreneurial skills. The initiative, under the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, focused on training in Fashion Designing, Catering Services, Electrical Installation, and Aluminium Fabrication.
At the graduation ceremony held in Otta, Dr. Isaac Adjei-Adoku, Manager of External Relations at WAPCo, highlighted the company’s ongoing dedication to community empowerment. He revealed that WAPCo has consistently invested $750,000 annually for over a decade in CSR efforts across its four operational countries: Nigeria, Ghana, Benin Republic, and Togo.
“Initially, we focused on building infrastructure like schools and hospitals,” said Dr. Adjei-Adoku. “But over time, we realized the importance of directly empowering the people by supporting brilliant and underprivileged youths with scholarships and vocational training.”
More Opportunities Coming
Dr. Adjei-Adoku announced that Automobile Services and Cinematography will be added to the training program in future editions, further expanding the range of opportunities for young people in the region.
Each of the 170 trainees from Lagos and Ogun States received an average support fund of $600, with additional financial aid for those in vocational trades to cover the cost of tools and equipment.
“Nigeria is our largest host community, with 56 communities along the pipeline corridor,” he added. “That’s why we prioritize giving back, especially through programs that promote sustainable livelihoods.”
Beyond Training – Tools for Success
WAPCo’s commitment doesn’t stop at training. Graduates also received start-up tools and equipment to help them launch their own businesses and contribute to their communities.
To ensure long-term impact and transparency, Dr. Adjei-Adoku shared that WAPCo is investing in a documentary series showcasing the training programs across the four countries, aimed at monitoring, evaluation, and accountability.
“Our goal is aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals,” he noted. “We believe that empowering youth is key to reducing poverty and driving community development.”
Community Leaders and Families Applaud the Initiative
The graduation event was attended by traditional rulers, local government officials, parents, and relatives of the beneficiaries, many of whom expressed heartfelt gratitude to WAPCo.
Several graduates shared their excitement and plans to make the most of the opportunity, pledging to apply their new skills to not only improve their own lives but to uplift others around them.
WAPCo reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining positive relations with host communities and pledged to continue investing in their development for years to come.
