In a major milestone for Africa’s fintech sector, three homegrown companies—Nigeria’s Moniepoint and Flutterwave, along with South Africa’s TymeBank—have been featured in TIME magazine’s 2025 list of the 100 Most Influential Companies. This recognition highlights the continent’s growing impact on global financial innovation.
Moniepoint: Empowering Nigeria’s Informal Economy
Listed in the “Leaders” category alongside giants like Hyundai and LinkedIn, Moniepoint has been instrumental in bridging the gap for Nigeria’s informal businesses. With over 90% of the country’s 40 million SMEs operating outside formal banking systems, the fintech firm provides digital banking tools, loans, and payment solutions to help them thrive.
CEO Tosin Eniolorunda emphasized, “For us, financial inclusion isn’t just a slogan—it’s the key to survival and expansion.” The company solidified its unicorn status in late 2024 after securing $110 million in funding, further cementing its role in Africa’s fintech revolution.
Flutterwave: Revolutionizing Cross-Border Payments
Recognized as a “Titan” alongside Meta and Amazon, Flutterwave continues to redefine digital payments across Africa. The $3 billion-valued company enables seamless international transactions, recently expanding its Send App to 49 U.S. states (excluding Texas) and introducing services in Saudi Arabia and Turkey.
With 98% of transfers completed in under three minutes, Flutterwave has become a backbone for African businesses engaging in global commerce. CEO Olugbenga Agboola remarked, “We’re playing the long game—there’s still so much more to achieve.”
TymeBank: Banking the Unbanked at Record Speed
South Africa’s TymeBank, grouped among “Pioneers” like SpaceX, achieved unicorn status in late 2024 after a $250 million Series D round. Operating in South Africa and the Philippines, the digital bank serves 17.5 million customers, many of whom previously lacked access to traditional banking.
“Walk into any grocery store in South Africa, and you can open a TymeBank account in under three minutes,” said Rachel Freeman, Chief Growth Officer. Its rapid, low-cost model has set a new standard for financial accessibility in emerging markets.
A Watershed Moment for African Innovation
TIME’s annual list, now in its fifth year, spotlights companies driving exceptional change worldwide. The inclusion of these three African fintech leaders underscores the continent’s rising influence in shaping the future of finance. With groundbreaking solutions in financial inclusion, cross-border payments, and digital banking, Moniepoint, Flutterwave, and TymeBank are proving that Africa is not just catching up—it’s leading the way.
