New City University (NCU), a dynamic new institution in Ayetoro, Ogun State, has officially declared its readiness to redefine higher education in Nigeria. At a recent Chancellor’s reception, the university unveiled a strategic roadmap focused on producing “job-ready” graduates through an entrepreneurship-driven model and the establishment of world-class media facilities.
Founder and Chancellor Prof. Akin Akingbesote emphasized that NCU is the result of a decade-long vision to bridge the capacity gap in Nigeria’s university system, where thousands of qualified students are left without admission every year.
A Media Powerhouse in the Making
A central pillar of NCU’s strategy is its Faculty of Media and Communication Studies. Under the guidance of Pro-Chancellor Prof. Ralph Akinfeleye—a legendary figure in Nigerian mass communication—the university is investing heavily in practical training.
-
Campus Broadcasting: Plans are already underway to launch New City FM and New City TV.
-
Hands-on Learning: Licensing is currently in progress, with the goal of providing students with real-world broadcasting experience by 2026.
-
Community Service: The stations will serve not just the campus but also the surrounding communities of Ayetoro, Lagos, Sagamu, and Abeokuta.
The Entrepreneurial Model: “Learning by Doing”
Unlike traditional institutions, NCU is integrating on-campus business ventures into its curriculum.
-
Student Ventures: Starting in January, the university will launch a bakery and bottled water production facility, where students will participate in every stage of the business process.
-
Job Creators, Not Seekers: The goal is for every graduate to possess a specific entrepreneurial skill, ensuring self-reliance upon graduation.
Incentives for Academic Excellence
To attract and reward top talent, Prof. Akingbesote announced groundbreaking scholarship incentives:
-
First-Class Tuition Refund: Students who graduate with a First-Class degree will have their entire tuition fees refunded and will be offered scholarships for further studies anywhere in the world.
-
Accounting Excellence: Accounting students who qualify as Chartered Accountants before graduation will also receive a full tuition refund and additional scholarship opportunities.
