The Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has appointed Ademola Adeyemi-Bero as the Chairman of its Board of Governors for 2025 during its 189th meeting. Adeyemi-Bero, who has over 38 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, is the Chief Executive Officer of FIRST Exploration & Petroleum Development Company Limited (FIRST E&P), a Nigerian independent oil company.
In a statement issued in Abuja by Nneamaka Okafor, spokesperson for the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, the appointment was hailed as a reaffirmation of Nigeria’s leadership in the global energy sector.
Before his appointment as Chairman of the OPEC Board of Governors, Adeyemi-Bero had already been confirmed as Nigeria’s OPEC Governor for 2025. The statement emphasized that this prestigious position highlights Nigeria’s significant influence within OPEC and underscores the country’s commitment to shaping global energy policies.
Minister Lokpobiri expressed that the appointment provides Nigeria with a crucial platform to advocate for balanced energy policies that benefit oil producers, consumers, and the global economy. He also congratulated Adeyemi-Bero on his elevation, noting it as a testament to Nigeria’s active and influential role in the global oil industry.
The Minister further extended gratitude to the outgoing Nigerian OPEC Governor, Gabriel Aduda, for his exemplary service, acknowledging his key contributions in advancing Nigeria’s interests within OPEC and ensuring the nation’s strong presence in global energy discussions.
In addition, OPEC appointed Adeeb Al-Aama, the Governor of Saudi Arabia for OPEC, as the Alternate Chairman of the Board of Governors for 2025.
The OPEC Conference also addressed several critical issues, including reports from the Secretary-General and the Economic Commission Board (ECB), and deliberated on vital internal matters. Furthermore, the conference extended the tenure of Haitham Al Ghais as OPEC Secretary General for another three years, effective August 1, 2025. Member nations praised his exceptional leadership and the Secretariat’s steadfast commitment to OPEC’s objectives.
