A U.S.-based Nigerian expert in geoscience and data innovation, Mathew Ogieva, is making remarkable strides in the global advancement of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), using his expertise to shape and inspire the next generation of innovators across continents.
Ogieva recently served as a Grand Award Judge at the prestigious 75th Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), held from May 10 to May 17 in Columbus, Ohio. ISEF, which brings together nearly 1,700 young scientists from more than 60 countries, is recognized as the largest and most esteemed pre-college science competition in the world.
Reflecting on the event, Ogieva described it as a global stage for youth innovation, where future scientists present cutting-edge ideas. In the Earth and Environmental Sciences category alone, he evaluated over 70 projects, applying his deep scientific knowledge and commitment to nurturing talent.
His involvement in shaping young scientific minds stretches far beyond ISEF. He has served as a judge at the California Science and Engineering Fair (CSEF 2025), hosted at California Lutheran University, and currently holds a position on the 2026 CSEF Judging Advisory Committee. His mentorship spans events like the State Science Day and STEP Fair in Ohio, the Terra NYC STEM Fair at New York University, the Technovation Girls Global Competition—which evaluates tech innovations by girls from over 60 countries—and the Virginia Junior Academy of Science (VJAS).
Ogieva’s influence goes beyond technical evaluation; it is rooted in his passion for mentorship and global scientific cooperation. His role in these events reflects a profound commitment to empowering young people, particularly in underrepresented communities, to embrace scientific inquiry and develop solutions to real-world challenges.
Proud of his Nigerian roots, Ogieva continues to foster scientific ties with his homeland, aiming to strengthen innovation and educational outreach in Nigeria and beyond.
