President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended warm appreciation to Nigerian workers in celebration of Workers’ Day, acknowledging their pivotal role in driving the nation’s economy and development.
In a message shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, the President praised workers as the “engine of our economy” and the “secret to our nation’s growth.”
“Happy Workers’ Day. You are the engine of our economy and the secret to our nation’s growth. Our administration has and will continue to prioritise workers’ welfare. Together, we will make Nigeria great again,” Tinubu wrote.
Honouring Contributions Across All Sectors
Tinubu’s message struck a unifying tone, celebrating the efforts of workers across all sectors—public and private, young and old, entrepreneurs and employees.
“Here’s to everyone, young and old, entrepreneur or employee, private or government employed, whose meaningful contributions help in no small way to the development of our homes, communities, and our dear nation,” he added.
Labour Leaders Say Workers Are ‘Worse Off’ Under Tinubu
The President’s tribute comes against a backdrop of mounting discontent from labour unions. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) used the May Day platform to express frustration over the worsening conditions faced by workers amid economic reforms and rising inflation.
In a statement, the NLC said:
“From last May Day to today, it has been one anti-worker policy after another. It has been excruciating and painful.”
Labour leaders have repeatedly called for decisive action on minimum wage adjustments, improved working conditions, and stronger protections for vulnerable workers.
A Signal of Engagement
Although Tinubu’s message did not outline specific policies, his renewed assurance of prioritising workers’ welfare may be interpreted as a willingness to continue engaging with organised labour in ongoing dialogues.
As the country navigates economic reforms and inflationary pressures, workers and unions are watching closely to see whether the President’s commitment translates into tangible improvements in livelihoods and labour rights.
