Stakeholders from across the sub-region will gather in Lagos this October for a major dialogue on how the insurance sector can respond to the growing threats posed by climate change. The 2025 West African Insurance Companies Association (WAICA) Education Conference, hosted by the Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA), will take place from October 12 to 15.
The annual forum will draw participants from Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, The Gambia, and other member states. According to the NIA, this year’s theme — “West African Insurer in the Face of Climate Change” — reflects the urgent need for the industry to redefine its role in safeguarding communities and economies from climate-driven risks.
Ebelechukwu Nwachukwu, who chairs the Local Organising Committee, explained that the meeting will highlight strategies for building resilience through sustainable insurance practices. She noted that as global insurers move to align with the Paris Agreement, West African operators must also innovate by embedding environmental risk assessments into underwriting, promoting sustainability across operations, and designing inclusive products to protect vulnerable populations.
The Lagos conference is expected to provide a platform for knowledge exchange, regional collaboration, and policy direction, positioning the insurance industry as a frontline partner in West Africa’s climate adaptation efforts.
