As Nigeria continues to grapple with economic and social challenges, the leadership of Precious Cornerstone University (PCU), Ibadan, has underscored the critical role of entrepreneurship in addressing the nation’s pressing issues.
During the institution’s three-day Entrepreneurship Week, held under the theme “Spark Innovation, Ignite Entrepreneurship,” the Vice-Chancellor, represented by the University Librarian, emphasized that innovation and entrepreneurship are not only tools for economic empowerment but fundamental to national development.
“Entrepreneurship offers viable solutions to Nigeria’s problems. While necessity may inspire invention, it is innovation that drives lasting solutions,” he noted.
Equipping Students with Entrepreneurial Mindsets
The event featured innovation masterclasses, business exhibitions, and a skills showcase designed to ignite creativity and entrepreneurial thinking among students. The initiative forms part of the university’s broader commitment to producing graduates who are not only academically sound but also equipped with 21st-century skills to thrive in a dynamic world.
Dr. Gbemi Sodeinde, Director of the Entrepreneurship Centre, said the programme was designed to instill in students a mindset of problem-solving through enterprise.
“Our goal is to transform students into solution providers. By exposing them to real-world entrepreneurial experiences, we are helping them understand how to turn ideas into impactful ventures,” she stated.
Industry Leaders Inspire and Mentor Students
Several guest speakers from diverse sectors shared their insights during the event. Entrepreneur and innovation strategist, Mr. Niyi Kolade, urged students to move beyond theoretical understanding and channel their creativity into tangible business solutions.
“Entrepreneurship is not just about running a business; it’s about making a meaningful impact,” he said. “True entrepreneurs solve problems, create value, and turn innovation into action. Your focus should be on impact, not just income.”
In a session titled “Entrepreneurship and You,” guest speaker Mrs. Racheal Salami challenged students to adopt the right mindset, stressing that resilience, vision, and strong values are essential for entrepreneurial success.
“Your attitude is everything. With the right spirit and determination, you can transform not only your lives but your communities,” she said.
Empowering a New Generation of Problem Solvers
The Entrepreneurship Week concluded with a reaffirmed commitment from the university to continue nurturing innovation and enterprise as core pillars of its educational philosophy. Students were encouraged to view entrepreneurship not just as a career path, but as a civic duty in building a more resilient and prosperous Nigeria.
The event highlighted a growing consensus in academic and policy circles: that empowering young people with entrepreneurial skills is central to driving inclusive development and sustainable solutions in Nigeria’s evolving economy.
