In a strategic move to deepen its footprint across West Africa, Rwandan agribusiness company Entreprise Urwibutso, led by founder and Managing Director Sina Gérard, has officially granted full distribution rights of its flagship product, Akabanga Chili Oil, to a Nigerian-based firm. This follows the firm’s complete acquisition of Akabanga 4U Limited, the previous local distributor.
Speaking at a formal handover event in Lagos, Gérard expressed enthusiasm about Nigeria’s vibrant culinary culture, which he described as a natural fit for Akabanga’s bold, spicy flavour profile.
“Nigeria represents one of Africa’s most dynamic consumer markets, celebrated for its rich and flavourful cuisine,” Gérard remarked. “We are thrilled to bring Akabanga to a country that truly appreciates spice. We believe this product will find a warm welcome in Nigerian kitchens.”
The transition signals a major milestone in the brand’s regional expansion strategy, with Nigeria positioned as a pivotal market for broader West African penetration.
Crafted in Rwanda, Akabanga Chili Oil is an artisanal fusion of premium yellow habanero peppers, sunflower oil, and natural spices. Widely acclaimed for its smoky, earthy aroma and potent flavour, the chili oil has become a staple for both home cooks and professional chefs alike—ideal as a finishing condiment or cooking ingredient across traditional and modern cuisines.
With full national control secured, the newly formed Akabanga Lagos now plans to embark on a robust distribution drive. The company has outlined an ambitious plan to recruit dealers and expand product availability across all 36 states, ensuring nationwide access to what has long been dubbed “Rwanda’s little secret.”
Temitope Mudabai, Founder of Akabanga Lagos and longtime advocate of the product in Nigeria, described the acquisition as a personal and professional triumph.
“Nigerians are passionate about rich, spicy food, and Akabanga captures that essence in just a few drops,” Mudabai said. “Having championed this product for years, I am proud to now lead its national rollout. This moment is the culmination of a dream—and it’s only the beginning.”
