What began as a gathering quickly evolved into a vibrant celebration of Nigeria’s small businesses — a showcase of creativity, resilience, and collective ambition. Over three days, the 2025 SME Conference brought together entrepreneurs, industry leaders, and innovators for an unforgettable experience that sparked new ideas, fostered connections, and ignited passion for growth across Nigeria’s SME landscape.

Day 1: A Feast for the Senses

The conference kicked off in spectacular fashion with the Fashion and Food Only Showcase, setting an energetic tone for the entire event. The space was alive with color, sound, and rich Nigerian culture as chefs, designers, and creators from across the country proudly displayed their craft.

Guests were treated to a culinary feast, with mouthwatering offerings from renowned chefs like Martha, Luscious, and Agabus. Palm Afrika’s innovative palm wine blends also added a unique twist to the experience. Meanwhile, the runway showcased Nigeria’s fashion prowess, with collections from designers such as Adire Teems, Atuche, Stitches by Lope, and many more. The atmosphere was electric as each designer displayed their creativity, proving that Nigerian fashion can compete with the best in the world.

Dignitaries, including Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, the Honourable Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, and Lagos State’s Senior Special Assistant on Tourism, Idris Aregbe, were also on hand to witness the magic. Day 1 left no doubt — Nigeria’s fashion and food sectors are rising stars with a global appeal.

Day 2: A Day of Insight and Innovation

Day 2 began with an official opening and a powerful keynote address from Tony O. Elumelu, the Chairman of Heirs Holdings and Founder of The Tony Elumelu Foundation. Elumelu’s speech was nothing short of inspiring, calling on SME owners to fully recognize their potential and persevere through the challenges of entrepreneurship. He reminded them that their businesses are vital to Nigeria’s economic future.

A key moment of the day was the session led by Professor Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms. He provided valuable insights into the new tax reform laws coming into effect in January 2026, offering practical advice on how SMEs can prepare for the changes.

Another major highlight was the launch of mySMEville, a groundbreaking digital platform created in partnership with MTN. This platform is set to empower entrepreneurs with a comprehensive view of their business activities in one central place.

Breakout sessions tackled key topics affecting the SME sector, including a panel discussion on “Competing and Thriving in the Digital Era: Technology and the Future of MSME Growth,” where experts shared strategies on leveraging AI and tech tools to scale businesses. In the exhibition halls, visitors explored food stalls offering everything from familiar comfort food to inventive new tastes, while also discovering a range of innovative local brands.

Day 3: Empowering Women and Celebrating Success

The final day of the conference was nothing short of emotional. The Women’s Summit took center stage, gathering female entrepreneurs and key government figures like the Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, and the Honourable Commissioner for Commerce, Mrs. Folashade Kaosarat Bada Ambrose-Medebem. Conversations centered around overcoming barriers and creating robust support systems for women-led MSMEs, reinforcing the critical role women play in Nigeria’s economic growth.

Two masterclasses were also held, with the Content Creation Masterclass led by Folagade Banks proving to be a standout session. The room buzzed with excitement as Banks shared insights on building a digital brand. A memorable highlight came during a raffle draw where three lucky attendees won brand-new iPhone 16 Pro devices. The winner of one of the iPhones, a young creator who had been using an iPhone 7 for seven years, moved the crowd with her emotional response.

The event culminated in the grand finale of the SMEDAN Pitch Competition, where 10 finalists out of over 700 applicants took the stage to pitch their innovative ideas. Five winners walked away with a combined ₦20 million in grant funding:

  • ₦10 million for the winner

  • ₦5 million for the first runner-up

  • ₦3 million for the second runner-up

  • ₦1 million for both the third and fourth runners-up

All semifinalists also received GROW Nigerian Gift Boxes and Nigerian-made tablets to further support their entrepreneurial journeys.

A Powerful Conclusion

As the conference drew to a close, there was a palpable sense of hope and opportunity. Over three days, attendees had gained knowledge, connected with industry leaders, and been inspired to innovate and grow. It was a powerful reminder that Nigeria’s SMEs are not only resilient but full of untapped potential — ready to scale, compete, and contribute to a brighter economic future.
