Professor Anthony Olusegun Adegbulugbe stands as one of Nigeria’s most accomplished technocrats and entrepreneurs — a rare blend of intellectual brilliance, visionary leadership, and enterprise. Known for his unmatched drive and discipline, he has carved a distinct niche in both academia and the energy industry, setting standards that continue to inspire generations.
Recently, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Green Energy International Limited (GEIL) achieved another historic milestone with the commissioning of the $400 million Otakikpo Crude Oil Export Terminal in Ikuru Town, Andoni LGA, Rivers State — the first of its kind since the Forcados Terminal was launched in 1971. Described by Professor Adegbulugbe as a “game-changing national infrastructure,” the facility provides a vital solution for about 40 stranded oil fields, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s economy.
According to GEIL’s Executive Director of Legal and Corporate Services, Olusegun Ilori, the project aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s agenda to boost crude oil output and resolve evacuation challenges that have long hindered production. With an initial capacity of 750,000 barrels, expandable to 3 million, and a daily loading capacity of 360,000 barrels, the terminal is poised to significantly lower production costs for indigenous operators.
A Scholar, Visionary, and Nation Builder
Born on April 2, 1955, Professor Adegbulugbe’s story exemplifies excellence and perseverance. A First-Class graduate in Electrical Engineering from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in 1976 with a perfect 5.0 GPA, he went on to earn a Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) in Nuclear Materials Engineering with a minor in Energy Planning and Management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1981. His academic pursuits also include advanced programs in Energy Planning and International Gas Business Management in the United States.
Currently serving as the third Chancellor of Joseph Ayo Babalola University (JABU) since December 2023, Professor Adegbulugbe has had an illustrious career spanning academia, public service, and entrepreneurship. Between 2005 and 2007, he served as Special Adviser on Energy to President Olusegun Obasanjo, chairing the National Gas-to-Power Initiative and contributing to the National Economic Management Team.
A member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), he was part of the Nobel Peace Prize-winning team in 2007, alongside former U.S. Vice President Al Gore.
