In its inaugural flight to Banjul over the weekend, Overland Airways received a warm welcome from top Gambian officials, who expressed enthusiasm about the new connection. The airline is currently operating three weekly flights and plans to increase frequency to daily service in the coming months.
Enhanced Regional Connectivity with Fifth Freedom Rights
During a reception at Banjul International Airport, Mr. Ebrima Sillah, The Gambia’s Minister of Transport, Works, and Infrastructure, announced that the Gambian government has granted Overland Airways fifth freedom rights. This designation allows the airline to operate flights between two foreign countries while originating from its home base, enabling broader network expansion, optimized operations, and improved access to underserved routes.
Minister Sillah emphasized the strategic importance of this partnership:
“Establishing direct air links between Lagos and Banjul will greatly benefit both nations, facilitating the movement of people and fostering economic growth. Overland Airways’ presence will enhance tourism and bring entrepreneurs to our shores, showcasing The Gambia’s world-class hospitality and stunning beaches.”
The Gambian government has pledged ongoing support for Overland Airways, including incentives, granting of rights, and streamlined processes for further network growth.
Advancing African Unity and Economic Integration
Capt. Edward Boyo, Chief Operating Officer of Overland Airways and SAATM Ambassador for West and Central Africa, highlighted the airline’s mission:
“Overland Airways is proud to contribute to the African Union’s vision for regional integration through the SAATM initiative. By making air travel more affordable and accessible, we are helping to drive economic growth, trade, and people-to-people connections across Africa.”
Boyo noted that the Lagos-Banjul route, which takes approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes, significantly enhances connectivity within West Africa. Overland Airways also recently launched flights to Freetown, Sierra Leone, further strengthening its regional presence.
Promoting Trade, Tourism, and Economic Development
The new Lagos-Banjul route aligns with AfCFTA’s goal of creating 13 million jobs across the continent by facilitating trade and tourism. Overland Airways aims to attract both tourists and entrepreneurs to The Gambia, capitalizing on the nation’s reputation for stunning beaches and exceptional hospitality.
By connecting key cities in West Africa and increasing flight frequencies, Overland Airways is setting the stage for broader economic opportunities and a more integrated Africa.
