The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) have formed a strategic partnership to promote the rule of law and protect citizen rights. NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, met with NBA President, Afam Osigwe (SAN), and his team on Thursday to discuss collaboration opportunities.
According to a statement by NLC’s Head of Information and Public Affairs, Comrade Benson Upah, the meeting enabled both organizations to share perspectives on entrenching the rule of law and safeguarding citizens’ fundamental rights. Discussions focused on how the labour and legal sectors can work together to ensure democracy thrives and governance is anchored on justice, fairness, and accountability.
Ajaero reaffirmed NLC’s commitment to working with NBA to promote workers’ and citizens’ rights. He emphasized the importance of a strong legal presence in protecting citizens from abuse, ensuring freedom of association, and upholding democratic norms.
Osigwe highlighted NBA’s determination to uphold the rule of law and strengthen legal institutions. He expressed readiness to partner with NLC in advocating for policies that respect citizens’ rights and promote social justice. The NBA also announced the reactivation of its pro bono department to provide free legal representation to indigent citizens.
Both organizations condemned the criminalization of civil protests and agreed that adhering to the principles of the rule of law is crucial for Nigeria’s sustainable progress.
