Union Bank of Nigeria has reaffirmed its dedication to entrepreneurship and the empowerment of women and youth through its alpher initiative by sponsoring the second cohort of the Nigerian-British Chamber of Commerce (NBCC) Women and Youth Entrepreneurship Development Centre (WYEDC) programme.
This strategic partnership has culminated in the graduation of 125 entrepreneurs who received hands-on training and access to business grants, equipping them with the skills and resources needed to thrive in Nigeria’s competitive business landscape.
According to recent statistics, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the backbone of Nigeria’s economy, contributing nearly 48% to the nation’s GDP and providing more than half of its industrial employment. Union Bank’s involvement in this initiative reflects its unwavering commitment to fostering national growth through entrepreneurship.
During the graduation ceremony, the Director General of NBCC, Dr. Ebere Njoku, emphasized the organization’s commitment to advancing women and youth in business, recognizing them as vital drivers of sustainable economic progress. She also extended her gratitude to the sponsors and facilitators whose support made the programme a success.
The initiative was originally inspired by the vision of NBCC President and Council Chairman, Mr. Ray Atelly, who aimed to create opportunities for women and young people to access entrepreneurial education and financial support. In his remarks, Mr. Atelly encouraged the graduates to stay resilient in the face of challenges, urging them to remain steadfast in pursuit of their goals. “If obstacles stop you, your dreams aren’t strong enough. Keep pushing—your time will come,” he advised.
Also addressing the graduates, NBCC Patron Senator Akin Odunsi encouraged them to apply the knowledge gained during the programme and be role models to others. He further recommended that future cohorts be offered internship placements following their training to enable practical application of their new skills and simultaneously benefit participating organizations.
Delivering a goodwill message on behalf of Union Bank’s Managing Director and CEO, Mrs. Yetunde Oni, the Bank’s Head of Retail and SME Business, Mrs. Vivian Imoh-Ita, applauded NBCC’s efforts in transforming the lives of aspiring entrepreneurs. She noted that investing in women and youth is essential for driving long-term economic transformation. “Nigeria’s business environment is challenging, but we believe those challenges can be turned into growth opportunities,” she said.
As part of the programme’s highlight, three standout entrepreneurs emerged winners in the Union Bank Business Pitch competition. Evelyn Ekene Ani of Evani.Ng took first place, followed by Martha Padonu of Beyond Photography and Therietta Vershima of La Teriz. Each received funding to support the growth of their businesses.
Union Bank’s continued support for initiatives like this underscores its commitment to building an innovative, inclusive, and resilient entrepreneurial ecosystem across Nigeria.
