Unilever Nigeria has announced that it achieved plastic neutrality in November 2024, marking a significant milestone in its efforts to combat the country’s plastic waste challenge.
In a statement, the company explained that this achievement means it has collected and processed more plastic than it introduced into the environment through the sale and distribution of its products.
Tim Kleinebenne, Managing Director of Unilever Nigeria, described the accomplishment as a key part of the company’s commitment to building a circular economy where plastic is reused and kept out of the environment. “Our plastic is our responsibility, and we are committed to collecting more than we sell,” he said. “We hope this example will inspire other companies to join this critical initiative.”
Kleinebenne also emphasized the company’s long-term sustainability strategy, stating, “We will continue to focus on sustainability by using our collection models to ensure a healthier planet, while also creating new job opportunities to improve livelihoods.”
Since 2014, Unilever has partnered with local recycling company Wecyclers to collect over 13,000 tonnes of plastic and generate employment for more than 1,000 people.
Wecyclers CEO Olawale Adebiyi praised Unilever Nigeria’s commitment to sustainability, stating, “Working with Unilever has been a journey of impactful collaboration and partnership.”
Adebiyi also highlighted key initiatives supported by Unilever, including the Wecyclers Recycling Exchange Program, which allows individuals to drop off recyclable materials at designated kiosks. Additionally, Unilever facilitated the establishment of 26 franchise locations through a corporate-backed Impact Bond program, which has played a vital role in helping the company collect more plastic than it generates.
