Top 10 Supermarket Chains in Nigeria by Store Count Dominating the Retail Sector

Nigeria’s retail sector is thriving, with numerous supermarket chains rising to prominence and redefining the shopping experience. While most supermarket chains in Nigeria operate fewer than 15 outlets, the industry has seen some leading brands focus on rapid expansion, setting the stage for a diverse retail landscape catering to different consumer needs.

Here are the top 10 supermarket chains in Nigeria ranked by store count:

  1. Prince Ebeano – 8 stores
    Prince Ebeano, established in 2009, operates eight supermarkets in Abuja and Lagos. The chain offers a mix of local and international products and gained prominence after merging De Prince Supermarkets with Ebeano Supermarkets. In December 2021, Prince Ebeano expanded internationally, opening a store in Ontario, Canada.

  2. Roban Stores – 9 stores
    Founded in 1999 in Enugu, Roban Stores has grown steadily across southeastern Nigeria. It operates nine outlets in states like Enugu, Anambra, and Ebonyi, offering groceries, household items, and fresh produce.

  3. Spar – 13 stores
    SPAR, a Dutch brand introduced in Nigeria by Artee Group in 2009, operates 13 stores in major cities like Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt. SPAR offers a modern shopping experience with a diverse range of products, including groceries, electronics, and clothing.

  4. Jendol Superstores – 14 stores
    Jendol Superstores was founded in 2005 by Prince Joshua Olojede. With 14 outlets in locations like Egbeda, Abule-Egba, and Ikotun, Jendol offers a variety of products, including groceries, household essentials, electronics, and personal care items.

  5. Foodco – 22 stores
    Established in 1982, Foodco operates 22 stores across Ibadan, Lagos, and Abeokuta. The supermarket chain focuses on fresh produce, baked goods, and household essentials, making it a long-standing player in Nigeria’s retail market.

  6. ShopRite – 26 stores
    ShopRite, the South African retail giant, entered Nigeria in 2005 and became a household name. Though it has scaled back its operations, ShopRite still operates 26 stores across 13 Nigerian states, offering a wide range of products and services.

  7. Justrite – 31 stores
    Founded in 2000, Justrite operates 31 stores in Lagos, Ogun, and Oyo states. Known for its large store formats, Justrite offers a one-stop shopping experience with a wide range of products, including groceries, electronics, clothing, and personal care items.

  8. Market Square – 36 stores
    Founded in 2015 by Sundry Markets Limited, Market Square operates 36 stores, mainly in the South-South and South-East regions. It offers groceries, fresh produce, household essentials, electronics, and baked goods, with a strong presence in Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Abia, and Imo states.

  9. Addide Supermarket – 44 stores
    Addide, founded in 2008, operates 44 stores, mostly in Lagos. Unlike larger supermarkets, Addide focuses on smaller, convenient outlets providing everyday essentials, including groceries, household items, and personal care products. This proximity-based model has cemented Addide’s position as a major player in Lagos.

  10. Bokku! Mart – 124 stores
    Leading the market with 124 stores, Bokku! Mart has made significant strides in Nigeria’s retail industry. Founded in 2022 by Atreos Limited, the supermarket chain operates on a smaller store format, ensuring wide accessibility across Lagos and other regions. Its rapid expansion has made it the most widespread grocery chain in Nigeria, offering a hard discount model that appeals to a broad customer base.

These supermarket chains are shaping the landscape of retail in Nigeria, setting trends with their store formats, product offerings, and customer-focused strategies.
