Tonya Osato Lawani: Driving Sports and Business Transformation Through Strategic Leadership

With over two decades of entrepreneurial leadership, Tonya Osato Lawani stands as one of Nigeria’s most dynamic business figures. As Group Chief Executive of SEAL Group, her influence cuts across manufacturing, advertising, hospitality, retail, and print media. A graduate of Lagos Business School and the Metropolitan School of Business & Management (UK), with executive training from Harvard University, Tonya embodies the blend of global perspective and local expertise needed to shape both business and sports in Africa’s largest economy.

She is a member of the Institute of Directors, a Non-Executive Director at Tatum Bank, an author of the bestselling iSucceed Business Planner, and now, a newly appointed Advisory Committee member of the National Institute of Sports (NIS). Fluent in English, Hausa, and French, she has long championed entrepreneurship, women’s empowerment, and youth development.

A New Chapter: Bringing Business Strategy into Sports

Tonya describes her NIS appointment as both an honour and a responsibility. “It is a platform to merge my passion for youth development with my expertise in business strategy,” she said. Her goal: to help build a robust, sustainable ecosystem that allows Nigerian sports to flourish, from grassroots athletes to global arenas.

Her unique edge lies in her ability to bring strategic foresight, commercial viability, and operational efficiency into sports management. She envisions NIS as more than just an athlete training hub—it can become a catalyst for grassroots development, job creation, and revenue diversification through public-private collaboration.

Closing the Gaps in Nigeria’s Sports Sector

Nigeria’s sports industry is weighed down by weak infrastructure, limited funding, and talent bottlenecks. Tonya believes NIS can lead reform by:

  • attracting private investment with innovative partnership models,

  • commercialising sports facilities and events,

  • establishing transparent pathways from grassroots to elite levels, and

  • introducing advanced training and support systems.

Her branding expertise also underscores her vision. “Nigeria’s sports must be repositioned just as our music and fashion have conquered global markets,” she argued, emphasizing the need for strong institutional identity and compelling storytelling to boost athletes’ global visibility.

Public-Private Partnerships: The Missing Link

Tonya stresses that government cannot build the sports ecosystem alone. Entities like SEAL Group can inject innovation, financial agility, and marketing expertise, creating experiences that make sports more attractive to fans, investors, and international stakeholders. From curated hospitality at stadiums to fan engagement strategies rooted in storytelling, she sees opportunities to turn Nigeria’s sports venues into profitable experiential hubs.

Lessons for the Next Generation

Drawing parallels between building businesses and nurturing athletes, Tonya highlights mentorship, resilience, and strategic planning as keys to success. She urges young athletes to see challenges as opportunities and to embrace lifelong learning—values equally vital for entrepreneurs and sports professionals.

She also advocates for embedding entrepreneurship, leadership, and financial literacy into athletes’ development programs to ensure smooth transitions after retirement. “Most athletes retire before 40; preparing them for life beyond sports is not optional—it’s essential,” she said.

Championing Women in Sports and Leadership

As a woman thriving in male-dominated industries, Tonya is committed to amplifying female participation in sports both on and off the field. She supports mentorship for female athletes and advocates for policies that elevate women into decision-making roles. “Women have rightfully earned their place—as athletes, coaches, and leaders. My role is to ensure their visibility and opportunities continue to expand.”

Legacy Beyond Business

For Tonya, legacy is not about the companies she has built but about creating institutions that endure. Her vision for NIS is to help establish a self-sustaining, world-class sports ecosystem that nurtures champions and strengthens Nigeria’s position on the global stage.

Her message to young Nigerians is simple but powerful:

“Your dreams are valid. Sports and business both demand courage, discipline, and excellence. Equip yourself with skills, believe in your vision, and dare to take bold paths—the future belongs to those who refuse to limit themselves.”
