President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness to deepen its relationship with Qatar, particularly in the areas of agriculture and economic cooperation. This commitment was made clear during a diplomatic visit by Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al-Khulaifi, Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, who delivered a special message from the Amir of Qatar at the State House in Abuja on Friday.
Tinubu welcomed the envoy warmly, noting that Qatar remains a trusted and strategic partner to Nigeria. “I deeply value our relationship with Qatar,” he said. “I’m pleased that the Amir continues to prioritize the discussions we began during my visit last year. Nigeria is open to strengthening this partnership in meaningful ways.”
He praised Qatar’s global peace-building efforts and its progress in human development, describing the Gulf nation as a responsible actor on the world stage. “Qatar has shown wisdom and maturity in addressing global challenges. Like you, we are facing the threats of terrorism and working to support our neighbors. We recognize and appreciate those who stand with us,” Tinubu added.
Addressing domestic progress, the president highlighted Nigeria’s ongoing economic reforms, particularly efforts to overhaul the tax system and revive the economy. “We’ve made tough decisions because change is necessary for growth,” he said. “We’re beginning to see the benefits of these choices.”
Tinubu emphasized the potential for bilateral cooperation in agriculture and food security. “Nigeria is a natural partner for Qatar. Together, we can build a more prosperous and food-secure future,” he stated, noting that peace remains essential for development.
He also instructed key cabinet members—Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu (Minister of Budget and Economic Planning), Mohammed Idris (Minister of Information and National Orientation), and Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar (Minister of Foreign Affairs)—to fast-track all existing agreements with Qatar and ensure their implementation.
In his response, Dr. Al-Khulaifi expressed Qatar’s eagerness to expand collaboration with Nigeria. “Our partnership goes beyond governments—it includes our people,” he noted. “We see great potential for cooperation in agriculture, food production, and petrochemicals.”
He confirmed that Qatari companies are exploring investment opportunities in Nigeria and that delegations will soon arrive to engage in further discussions. “His Highness, the Amir, views Nigeria as a strategic partner in Africa, and we’re here to move that vision forward,” he said.
The visit marks a new phase in Nigeria-Qatar relations, signaling renewed diplomatic and economic cooperation aimed at long-term mutual benefits.
