SLB Lands Key Contract for Angola’s Kaminho Deepwater Project with Total Energies

Total Energies has awarded Angola’s SLB a contract to supply subsea production systems for Angola’s Kaminho deepwater project, enhancing oil output.

In a significant move for Angola’s energy sector, SLB, a global leader in technology and services for the energy industry, has been awarded a contract by TotalEnergies for the supply of subsea production systems for the Kaminho deepwater project.

This contract, granted to SLB’s OneSubsea subsidiary last month, marks a key milestone in the development of Block 20/11, located offshore Angola. The Kaminho project is set to become a cornerstone of Angola’s oil production capabilities.

According to a statement, the contract entails the provision of a 13-well subsea production system, designed to facilitate a production capacity of 70,000 barrels per day. This ambitious project is expected to commence production in 2028, significantly enhancing Angola’s access to its vast offshore energy resources.

SLB’s involvement extends beyond the supply of subsea systems. The company will also support the Kaminho project’s onshore operations through the assembly, manufacturing of modules, installation, commissioning, and life-of-field services. The first phase of the project will see SLB collaborating closely with TotalEnergies to deploy a highly configurable subsea production platform. This platform will include a standardised vertical monobore subsea tree, wellhead, and controls system, all of which are expected to optimize the efficiency and output of the Kaminho project.

SLB’s strategic focus on sustainability and technological advancement in the energy sector is further underscored by its participation in the upcoming African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energy 2024. Scheduled for November 4-8 in Cape Town, the event is a premier platform for project operators, financiers, technology providers, and government representatives to collaborate and sign deals in African energy.

SLB’s activities in Africa are not confined to Angola. Earlier this year, the company announced plans to increase its investments in Algeria, focusing on expanding its operational footprint and enhancing oil and gas production capabilities in the country. This includes deploying advanced oilfield technologies and real-time data analytics to optimize production and efficiency, demonstrating SLB’s commitment to advancing local content and supporting local businesses.

Also in Libya, it was stated that the SLB has been instrumental in expanding the country’s oil production capabilities. Last year, the company signed a groundbreaking contract with Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC) to drill three new wells. This initiative, aimed at boosting production at the Nesr and Al-Waha fields, aligns with Libya’s goal of enhancing oil recovery from existing fields by leveraging new technologies and expertise.

Meanwhile, in Angola, SLB has been collaborating with the national oil and gas company Etu Energias. Last September, the two companies signed a technical service agreement for the development of Block 2/5. This collaboration involves the creation of advanced engineering wells designed to optimise extraction processes and maximize production efficiency. The project is a testament to SLB’s commitment to environmentally responsible extraction practices.

SLB’s influence in Africa also extends to Egypt, where it has a longstanding partnership with the Egyptian government and local companies. The company has been instrumental in modernising Egypt’s oil and gas infrastructure, particularly through its involvement in the Zohr gas field project – one of the largest gas discoveries in the Mediterranean. SLB has provided drilling and production services to enhance gas extraction and processing, further solidifying its role as a key player in the region.
