As the August 28 National Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) draws closer, the Conference of PDP Professionals has called on party leaders to ensure that the exercise is conducted with integrity, transparency, and a focus on merit.
In a statement released on Sunday and signed by the group’s National Coordinator, Obinna Nwachukwu, the conference emphasized the importance of electing a capable and visionary team of national officers to steer the party forward. The highly anticipated convention, slated to take place in Kano, will mark a critical juncture for the PDP as it prepares to resolve internal leadership challenges and reposition itself ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The group commended the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) for reaffirming its commitment to holding the convention as scheduled during its meeting on May 27. It also lauded the appointments of Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State as Chairman of the National Convention Organising Committee and Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State as head of the Zoning Committee.
Highlighting the stakes of the convention, the statement urged delegates and stakeholders to begin mobilizing and preparing for the task of electing credible, experienced leaders.
“We urge our party’s leadership to prioritize competence, dedication, and institutional knowledge over regional or divisive interests,” the statement read. “The incoming leadership will carry the heavy responsibility of guiding the PDP toward reclaiming power in 2027. This requires tested individuals who understand the political landscape and possess the skills to unify and strengthen the party.”
The Conference of PDP Professionals expressed optimism that the convention will serve as a turning point for the party, allowing it to rebuild public trust and present itself as a viable alternative capable of delivering effective, people-centered governance.
“We believe that this convention will offer a fresh opportunity for the PDP to rebrand, regroup, and reconnect with Nigerians in the quest for national renewal,” the group stated.
