Pascal Dozie, a Nigerian entrepreneur renowned for his influential role in shaping Nigeria’s banking and telecommunications industries, has passed away at the age of 85.
The news of his death was shared in a family statement by his son, Uzoma Dozie, on April 8. Uzoma described his father as a “devoted husband, father, grandfather, and a man of unwavering Catholic faith.”
“With deep sorrow, but with gratitude to God for a life well spent, we announce the passing of our beloved father,” Uzoma said, highlighting his father’s lifelong service to God, family, and country.
Legacy in Banking and Telecommunications
Mr. Dozie was best known as the founder of Diamond Bank, which he established in 1990. Under his leadership, Diamond Bank became one of Nigeria’s most innovative financial institutions before it merged with Access Bank in 2019. He handed over the leadership of the bank to his son, Uzoma, who served as CEO until the merger.
Beyond banking, Mr. Dozie made significant contributions to Nigeria’s telecommunications industry. As the pioneer chairman of MTN Nigeria, he played a pivotal role in guiding the telecom giant through its early stages after Nigeria’s telecom sector was liberalised in the early 2000s. His leadership helped MTN expand rapidly, establishing it as Nigeria’s largest mobile network and a key driver of the country’s digital transformation.

Born on April 9, 1939, in Egbu, Owerri, Imo State, Pascal Dozie was educated at Our Lady’s School in Emekuku before studying at the London School of Economics, where he earned a degree in economics. He furthered his education with a master’s degree in administrative science from City University, London.
