The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) is taking bold steps to strengthen its position as a continental leader in technology-driven education. According to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olufemi Peters, the university is focused on advancing its global digital ranking and showcasing Nigeria’s capacity for innovation in Open and Distance Learning (ODL).
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, Peters revealed that NOUN will host the 3rd MoodleMoot Africa Conference from October 8 to 10, 2025, at the Shehu Yar’Adua Centre — marking the first time the international event will hold in Nigeria after two previous editions in South Africa.
“This is more than a conference; it’s a statement of leadership,” Peters said. “NOUN is positioning itself at the heart of Africa’s digital education transformation by demonstrating scalable, technology-powered learning models.”
The event is expected to attract over 400 participants — including university heads, software developers, and policymakers — from 24 countries across Africa, Europe, and beyond. Discussions will centre on the future of open-source learning, educational technology, and innovation in distance education.
Highlighting the university’s readiness, Peters noted that NOUN’s Moodle-based learning system currently serves over 170,000 students, offering advanced learning analytics and hybrid delivery powered entirely by open-source tools.
“Our participation in MoodleMoot is strategic. It enhances our international visibility, fosters research collaboration, and strengthens our position as a key influencer in Africa’s EdTech ecosystem,” he added.
Prof. Grace Jokhtan, Chairperson of the Local Organising Committee, assured that the conference would be one of the most remarkable events ever hosted by the institution, showcasing the best of Nigerian innovation and hospitality.
With this hosting, NOUN not only underscores its growing academic influence but also reinforces Nigeria’s role in shaping the future of education technology across Africa.
