In a major stride towards building a thriving digital economy, Nigeria has opened the doors to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) Digital Innovation Park in Abeokuta, Ogun State. This groundbreaking centre symbolizes a strong collaboration between federal and state governments, focused on nurturing local tech talent and sparking innovation.
Officially launched on June 4 by Dr. Bosun Tijani, Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, the park is designed as a vibrant ecosystem to help startups grow, equip young people with essential digital skills, and fuel technological entrepreneurship across the region.
“The digital innovation park is a key pillar of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” Dr. Tijani shared. “By fostering creativity, empowering youth, and promoting inclusive growth, we’re paving the way for Nigeria’s ambition to reach a $1 trillion economy.”
Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun welcomed the initiative, highlighting its potential to transform Ogun into a hub for technology and innovation. “Our goal is to create an environment where talent thrives and economic opportunities multiply,” he said.
The park offers more than just infrastructure — it provides high-speed internet access, collaborative workspaces, hands-on training labs, and mentorship programs aimed at bridging the digital skills gap in Nigeria.
The urgency of this initiative is underscored by data from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), which estimates sub-Saharan Africa will need around 230 million digital jobs by 2030. Currently, less than 20% of Nigerian university graduates are considered job-ready in tech roles, largely due to insufficient practical training, according to GetBundi, a STEM-focused institute.
By focusing on skills development and real-world experience, the NCC Digital Innovation Park aims to address this shortfall and turn Nigeria’s youthful population into a powerhouse of innovation.
More than a tech hub, the park is set to become a dynamic community centre that cultivates ideas, nurtures startups, and drives economic growth — helping Abeokuta emerge as one of Africa’s new hotspots for digital entrepreneurship.
