In a comprehensive media briefing, Nigerian Breweries Plc. has detailed a multi-faceted sustainability strategy, revealing a foundational investment of over NGN2.5 billion (US$1.7 million) in renewable energy to power its journey toward net-zero operations.
The company’s Corporate Affairs Director, Uzodinma Odenigbo, outlined a strategy that seamlessly integrates environmental stewardship with community resilience. He stated that significant capital has been deployed for a transition to renewable solutions, including biomass, solar, and energy-efficiency projects, supported by power purchase agreements with specialized green energy firms.
“This transition is a core part of our operational evolution,” Odenigbo explained, highlighting that the environmental commitment extends beyond energy. He pointed to substantial water replenishment projects and a major reforestation partnership in Ogun State that has seen over 300,000 trees planted, enhancing local ecosystems and biodiversity.
The company’s strategy consciously links this environmental investment with direct socio-economic development. Odenigbo detailed a parallel investment of more than NGN200 million (US$138,781) in community empowerment, specifically targeting skill-acquisition programs and the construction of cassava milling plants in Kaduna and Awo-Omamma. These initiatives are designed to boost local economic opportunities and create sustainable livelihoods, moving beyond one-off donations to capacity building.
Further demonstrating its holistic approach to corporate responsibility, Nigerian Breweries is sustaining its advocacy for road safety. In partnership with the Beer Sectoral Group and the Federal Road Safety Corps, the company is running an annual campaign to promote responsible alcohol consumption, with a goal of directly engaging 1,000 commercial drivers by the end of 2025.
This integrated approach positions Nigerian Breweries’ sustainability efforts not as isolated projects, but as interconnected pillars of a unified corporate strategy: powering operations with clean energy, nurturing the environment, and empowering the communities it serves.
