Ndidi Okonkwo Nwuneli is a distinguished leader in global advocacy, serving as the President and CEO of the ONE Campaign, a renowned organization dedicated to equity, justice, and economic empowerment in Africa. With teams in nine countries, including the United States, where she is currently based, Ndidi brings over 27 years of experience in international development, entrepreneurship, and thought leadership.
A Legacy of Leadership and Influence
Beyond her role at ONE, Ndidi has made significant contributions as a board member of prestigious organizations such as the Rockefeller Foundation, Chanel Foundation, and Stanbic IBTC Group. She has also lent her expertise to the World Economic Forum’s Young Global Leaders, The Bridgespan Group, and several multinational corporations and development institutions. Her past service includes board positions at Nestlé Nigeria Plc, Nigerian Breweries Plc, and the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) Switzerland, among others.
A Career Built on Passion and Impact
Ndidi’s career began at McKinsey & Company, where she worked across Chicago, New York, and Johannesburg, honing her skills in strategy and problem-solving. In 2000, she returned to Nigeria as the pioneer Executive Director of FATE Foundation, empowering young entrepreneurs. In 2002, she founded LEAP Africa to cultivate a new generation of ethical leaders and launched NIA to support female university students in achieving their full potential.
Between 2008 and 2024, Ndidi focused her efforts on revolutionizing African agriculture and nutrition. As Co-founder and Chair of Sahel Consulting Agriculture & Nutrition, she partnered with global organizations such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, USAID, and ECOWAS to drive large-scale transformation in the agricultural sector. She also co-founded AACE Foods, a company producing high-quality packaged spices, seasonings, and cereals for local and international markets.
Championing African Advocacy and Economic Growth
Through the ONE Campaign, Ndidi has been at the forefront of mobilizing over $1 trillion in investments for Africa. Despite geopolitical shifts and a decline in global development aid, she remains steadfast in advocating for Africa’s rightful place on the global stage. She believes that Africa must actively shape its own destiny by fostering sustainable growth, securing fair investment opportunities, and ensuring transparency in governance.
Navigating Board Leadership with Purpose
Serving on multiple boards requires discipline and strategic prioritization. Ndidi has carefully selected roles that align with her values, allowing her to contribute meaningfully while maintaining balance. In 2024, she streamlined her commitments, attending some meetings virtually to optimize her time and effectiveness.
Shifting Global Perceptions of Africa
Over the years, Ndidi has observed a shift in global engagement with Africa, marked by declining support from traditional allies in the West and increased interest from Asia and the Middle East. Additionally, Africa’s youth population is now seen as a vital asset rather than a challenge. However, she remains committed to changing the outdated narrative that portrays Africa primarily through the lens of poverty and struggle. Instead, she highlights the continent’s innovation, resilience, and economic potential.
Overcoming Challenges and Building Resilience
Ndidi’s journey has not been without obstacles. As one of the few African women in leadership positions, she has had to continuously prove her expertise. Her strategy? Immersing herself deeply in her field, gaining hands-on experience, and authoring insightful books and articles to establish authority. She credits her faith, determination, and support system for her ability to navigate these challenges.
Empowering the Next Generation of Leaders
Through LEAP Africa and the NIA Project, Ndidi has played a crucial role in youth and women’s empowerment. She emphasizes:
- Representation Matters: When given a seat at the table, individuals must confidently advocate for change.
- Be the First, but Not the Last: She actively grooms successors to carry forward her vision.
- The Power of Community: She fosters networks of support, ensuring that young leaders rise together.
Transforming Africa’s Agricultural Landscape
Ndidi envisions a thriving agricultural sector driven by innovation and entrepreneurship. She believes that African governments must create policies that prioritize food security, local production, and fair financing for agribusinesses. In Nigeria, addressing security concerns and investing in infrastructure are crucial for sustainable growth.
Measuring Impact and Sustaining Change
For Ndidi, success is not just about individual achievements but about building organizations that thrive beyond her leadership. Seeing AACE Foods products on store shelves and meeting LEAP alumni who credit the organization for their growth brings her immense fulfillment. She is particularly proud that the institutions she founded—LEAP Africa, Sahel Consulting, AACE Foods, and African Food Changemakers—continue to thrive independently.
Lessons from a Transformational Career
Ndidi attributes much of her success to the foundational skills she gained at McKinsey & Company, which equipped her with analytical and strategic problem-solving abilities. These skills have been instrumental in her entrepreneurial and development work.
Looking ahead, she remains committed to advocating for investments in Africa’s healthcare, economic growth, and creative industries through the ONE Campaign. She is also passionate about engaging youth through the ONE Academy, an e-learning platform designed to empower the next generation of activists.
A Life of Purpose and Gratitude
As she celebrates 50 years of impact, Ndidi reflects on the values that have shaped her journey—integrity, humility, hard work, and faith. She is deeply grateful for the unwavering support of her husband, Mezuo Nwuneli, her children, family, mentors, and spiritual communities.
Her guiding principle? “Live with open hands.” By giving generously, embracing vulnerability, and letting go of what no longer serves her mission, she continues to leave an indelible mark on Africa and the world.
Inspiring the Next Generation
For young Africans eager to make a difference, Ndidi offers three key pieces of advice:
- Commit to excellence and integrity in all you do.
- Challenge outdated narratives about Africa by showcasing its innovation and potential.
- Demand transparency and accountability in governance by leveraging data and advocacy.
Ndidi Okonkwo Nwuneli’s journey is a testament to the power of purpose-driven leadership. Through her relentless dedication, she is not only reshaping Africa’s future but also inspiring countless others to do the same.
