The Niger Delta region is set for a major economic boost as the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) releases an initial ₦10 billion to fuel entrepreneurship and job creation. This substantial funding marks the first phase of a ₦30 billion investment dedicated to empowering local businesses through the Niger Delta Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Trade, Mines and Agriculture (NDCCITMA).
Empowering Entrepreneurs Across All Levels
Announcing the initiative at the inauguration of NDCCITMA’s board of directors in Port Harcourt, NDDC Managing Director Dr. Samuel Ogbuku emphasized that the fund will support 5,000 businesses, spanning from nano and micro to small-scale enterprises across the region.
“We are not just making promises. Today, we begin with action by releasing ₦10 billion for the immediate commencement of the entrepreneurship development programme,” said Ogbuku.
The goal? To stimulate sustainable commerce, create jobs, and promote economic self-reliance within the Niger Delta.
Long-Term Commitment to Economic Growth
The ₦10 billion release is just the beginning, as the NDDC has pledged a total of ₦30 billion for the entire initiative. The funds will be managed by NDCCITMA, ensuring direct support to registered entrepreneurs and businesses within the region.
Ogbuku also urged all NDDC contractors and vendors to register with NDCCITMA before July 31, stating that registration will be an added advantage in securing future opportunities with the commission.
A Vision for a Thriving Regional Economy
Board Chairman of NDCCITMA, Idaere Ogan, expressed the chamber’s full commitment to partnering with NDDC to actualize this transformative vision.
“Our mission is clear—facilitate job creation, promote innovation, support export growth, and build productive partnerships that touch every tier of the economy,” Ogan said.
By serving as a springboard for enterprise development, NDCCITMA aims to bridge the gap between potential and opportunity, enabling local entrepreneurs to thrive in a dynamic economic environment.
What This Means for the Niger Delta
This bold move by NDDC signals a new chapter for the Niger Delta—one where economic empowerment is front and center. With thousands of businesses set to benefit, and targeted support for job creation and trade, the initiative promises inclusive, long-term development for one of Nigeria’s most resource-rich yet underserved regions.
As the programme unfolds, all eyes will be on how the partnership between NDDC and NDCCITMA reshapes the entrepreneurial landscape—and how it sets the pace for similar reforms across the country.
