The National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR), in collaboration with Google, has launched the AI Fund, a ₦100 million initiative to support Nigerian startups leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) to develop innovative solutions. This program aligns with the Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy’s strategic efforts to harness AI’s potential for development, innovation, and well-being in Nigeria.
Following the Artificial Intelligence Strategy Workshop in April and the release of the National AI Intelligence Strategy in August, the AI Fund marks a significant step in actualizing these plans. The fund provides Nigerian startups with necessary resources to innovate and scale their AI solutions.
Eligible startups must be based in Nigeria, focused on AI-driven technology solutions with significant impact potential, and have a live product demonstrating early traction. Selected startups will receive up to ₦10 million in funding, access to Google’s AI tools, mentorship, and global network.
Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, emphasized the initiative’s importance: “The AI Fund nurtures homegrown innovation, addressing local challenges and contributing to economic growth.”
Dr. Bunmi Ajala, National Coordinator of NCAIR, highlighted the collaborative effort: “Our partnership with Google empowers entrepreneurs to create impactful AI solutions.”
Olumide Balogun, West Africa Director, Google, reiterated Google’s commitment: “Google supports the AI Fund as part of our mission to enhance digital capabilities across Africa.”
The AI Fund is open for applications from September 10 to September 25, 2024. Successful applicants will be announced in October 2024, with the program kicking off shortly thereafter.
