A Federal High Court in Kano has sentenced renowned make-up artist, Abdullahi Huseini, popularly known as Amuscap, to six months imprisonment for the abuse and defacement of the Nigerian currency at his wedding celebration.
Presiding Judge Justice S.M. Shuaibu delivered the ruling after Huseini pleaded guilty to a one-count charge filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The charge stated that Huseini sprayed N100,000 in ₦1000 notes during a social event on December 6, 2024, at the Ali Jita Event Centre in Kano, violating Section 21(1) of the Central Bank Act, 2007.
EFCC Statement and Investigation
According to a statement from the EFCC, Huseini’s arrest came after credible intelligence revealed his deliberate mutilation and abuse of the naira during his wedding festivities.
“The convict was arrested following credible intelligence on his involvement in the deliberate mutilation of the Nigerian currency by spraying it at his own wedding celebration,” the EFCC confirmed.
Court Proceedings
During court proceedings, prosecuting counsel Zarami Mohammed laid out the facts and presented supporting evidence, including video footage and witness accounts. With Huseini admitting guilt, the court found him guilty without delay and sentenced him to a six-month jail term with no option of fine.
“Investigations revealed that Huseini willfully defaced and abused the Naira notes in defiance of warnings and campaigns against the practice,” the EFCC noted.
Crackdown on Naira Abuse
This case comes amid renewed efforts by Nigerian authorities to curb the abuse of the Naira, particularly through the spraying and mishandling of currency at social events. The EFCC has issued multiple public warnings, emphasizing the illegality of such actions under the Central Bank Act.
Huseini’s sentencing sends a strong signal that the crackdown is in full effect and that offenders, regardless of status or circumstance, will be held accountable.
With no alternative to serve a fine, Huseini will complete the entire six-month sentence, becoming one of the most high-profile individuals penalized in Nigeria’s growing campaign against currency abuse.
