The International Transport Federation (ITF) has praised Nigeria for achieving a 75.5% compliance score under the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Cape Town Convention and has committed to collaborating with the country to develop a sustainable aviation industry in Africa.
ITF General Secretary Stephen Cotton conveyed this support in a formal email to Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, during the closing session of the 46th ITF Congress in Marrakesh, Morocco, which concluded over the weekend.
Founded in 1896, the ITF is a global federation of transport workers’ unions, representing 19.7 million transport workers across 677 member organizations in 149 countries as of 2017.
In the letter signed by Herder Santana, Executive Secretary to the General Secretary, the ITF congratulated Nigeria on its notable compliance achievement. The organization emphasized the importance of this milestone for Nigeria’s aviation sector and its regional influence.
“We congratulate Nigeria for attaining a 75.5% compliance score under the ICAO Convention. This accomplishment positions Nigeria to further develop a robust regional aviation industry founded on principles of decent work, economic growth, and environmental sustainability,” the letter stated.
The ITF also recognized the leadership and dedication of the Nigerian government, particularly praising Minister Keyamo for his commitment to advancing the industry.
“We extend our gratitude to the Nigerian government and Honourable Minister Festus Keyamo for his steadfast dedication to driving this progress. We were honored by his presence at the 46th ITF Congress and look forward to ongoing collaboration to enhance global aviation standards,” it added.
The Ministry of Aviation highlighted that the ITF Congress serves as a vital global platform for transport workers and stakeholders to address pressing issues within the industry. It noted that Nigeria’s impressive compliance score under the Cape Town Convention reflects the country’s growing prominence and dedication to international aviation standards.
