The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has announced the commencement of subsidized rice sales to the general public, starting today. This initiative aims to mitigate the soaring price of rice, which has reached as high as N90,000 per 50kg bag in some states.
The government had previously distributed subsidized rice to civil and public servants. Despite promises to sell rice at N40,000 per 50kg bag, many Nigerians have yet to benefit from the initiative, with prices remaining high.
Reports from various states indicate that rice prices remain above the promised N40,000. Citizens have expressed frustration, citing the government’s failure to deliver on its promises.
Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, acknowledged global and domestic factors contributing to the food crisis. The government’s initiative to release 30,000 metric tonnes of subsidized rice aims to provide relief to Nigerians.
The initial phase targeted civil and public servants, requiring identification and National Identification Number for purchase. Sales points were set up at designated locations. The government has assured that sales to the general public will begin today.
The high cost of rice continues to affect citizens across regions, with prices ranging from N80,000 to N110,000 per bag. The rising cost of food has worsened Nigeria’s food inflation crisis, with food inflation hitting 40.87% in June 2024.
Associate Professor Unekwu Onuche described the government’s palliative measures as short-term solutions, emphasizing the need for improved food security and affordability.
As the government rolls out subsidized rice sales to the public, many Nigerians await the realization of the N40,000 price point, hoping for relief amid the worsening food inflation.
