Lagos, Nigeria — August 8, 2025
Nigeria’s fourth-largest telecom operator has shed its old skin. On Friday, 9mobile officially rebranded as T2, unveiling an ambitious plan to evolve into a digital-first operator powered by cloud, artificial intelligence, and advanced analytics.
Chief Executive Officer Obafemi Banigbe framed the move as a total reinvention rather than a cosmetic facelift.
“We are no longer who we were; we are becoming something greater, more ambitious, and more in tune with the future,” Banigbe told a packed audience in Lagos, joined by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, and other industry leaders.
A Pivot to the Digital Core
T2 says it is targeting Nigeria’s growing population of startups, creatives, and remote workers — customers demanding agile, hyper-personalised digital solutions. By leaning on cloud infrastructure, AI-driven services, and faster product rollouts, the company hopes to position itself as the go-to telecom for the country’s innovation economy.
Banigbe acknowledged 9mobile’s rocky past, marked by financial strain and market share losses, but reframed those years as fuel for resilience.
“Our challenges are reminders, not defeats,” he said, dedicating the rebrand to “every Nigerian dreaming of something better.”
Strategic Alliance for Better Coverage
The transformation comes just weeks after T2 sealed a three-year national roaming agreement with industry giant MTN Nigeria. The deal, approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission, will allow T2 customers to tap into MTN’s extensive network, particularly in underserved regions — a significant competitive boost in a market where coverage gaps still frustrate millions.
A Rollercoaster History

-
2012: Subscriber base soars past 15 million, driven by youth-focused marketing and early adoption of 3G and 4G LTE.
-
2017: Mounting debts of $1.2 billion trigger Etisalat Group’s exit.
-
2018: Teleology Holdings takes control; company rebrands as 9mobile.
-
2025: Second rebrand to T2, with a strategic pivot to digital-first operations.
The Bigger Picture
Nigeria’s telecom market is fiercely competitive, with operators increasingly partnering to share infrastructure and cut costs. T2’s dual strategy — leveraging MTN’s reach while building out digital capabilities — could either cement it as a serious challenger or relegate it to a niche player in the race for the country’s 220+ million mobile subscribers.
For Banigbe, the bet is clear: reinvent or fade away.
