The Federal Government has commenced the free conversion of petrol-powered commercial vehicles to run on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in Ibadan, Oyo State, and Zaria, Kaduna State. The initiative aims to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal and promote cleaner energy.
In Ibadan, about 100 commercial vehicles were converted to CNG at three locations. Louisa Afu, Business Development Executive of Presidential CNG, explained that the distribution of conversion kits is part of the government’s efforts to promote sustainable energy solutions.
Afu stressed that the free conversion exercise will benefit many vehicle owners, reducing fuel costs and contributing to a cleaner environment. The initiative will be extended to other parts of Nigeria.
Sowole Jayeola, a CNG user, appealed to the government to reduce the cost of CNG conversion, stating that he saves N175,000 monthly on fuel costs.
In Kaduna, the Federal Government launched an initiative to convert 50 vehicles to run on CNG. Team Lead Dauda Suleiman explained that CNG is cheaper, sustainable, and safer, with a kilogram costing N230 in Abuja and N455 in Kaduna.
Suleiman noted that CNG covers more distance than petrol, making it cost-effective. The initiative will be expanded to other parts of the country, with more CNG stations to be established.
Edo State Launch
In Edo State, the Federal Government declared that the conversion of vehicles to gas would reduce transportation costs and lead to an affordable cost of living. The initiative targets one million vehicles across the country.
