Dangote Cement Empowers Women Entrepreneurs in Benue with ₦100,000 Grants

In a strong move to uplift women-led businesses in Nigeria, Dangote Cement Plc has launched a cash grant initiative to support female entrepreneurs in its host communities in Benue State, providing a much-needed boost to local economic activity.

The empowerment programme, held in Gboko, saw selected women receive ₦100,000 each to strengthen and grow their businesses. The initiative is part of the company’s broader commitment to social investment and grassroots development.

“This financial support is designed to help women expand their businesses by addressing their specific needs—whether it’s restocking inventory or upgrading equipment,” said Mr. Wakeel Olayiwola, Group Head of Social Performance at Dangote Cement.

He emphasized that the grants aim to foster economic independence among women, allowing them to generate more income, reduce dependence on their spouses, and invest in their families’ education, health, and well-being.

Importantly, the grants are non-repayable, offering beneficiaries a rare opportunity to grow their businesses without financial burden.

Community-Driven Selection Process

The selection of recipients involved local traditional leaders from communities such as Quarry, Tse-Kucha, Amua, Mbazembe, Mbatur, and Pass Brothers, alongside members of the Dangote Community Consultative Committee. This inclusive approach ensures that the funds reach women with genuine business needs and community ties.

Olayiwola added that the company will monitor the progress of the women and evaluate how effectively the grants are being used.

A Commitment to Sustainable Development

This empowerment programme follows Dangote Cement’s previous initiative in which bursaries to students in host communities were more than doubled. In 2024, the company also signed a Community Development Agreement (CDA) with six host communities—demonstrating a sustained commitment to inclusive growth.

Speaking at the event, Acting Plant Director Munusamy Murugan—represented by Tavershima Soom—announced that the initiative will become an annual programme, with more interventions planned, including a farmers support scheme and youth skill acquisition programmes.

Impact on Beneficiaries

One of the recipients, Ruth Tser, expressed gratitude and shared plans to invest the grant in her cassava farming business, commending the company for its generosity and support.

“This support will make a big difference in my business and help me provide more for my family,” she said.

A Model for Corporate Social Responsibility

Johnson Kor, Head of Social Performance at the Gboko Plant, assured the communities of continued support and urged beneficiaries to be ambassadors of the Dangote brand, using the opportunity to create positive change.

With this initiative, Dangote Cement Plc reinforces its role not just as a corporate giant, but as a catalyst for community development and women’s economic empowerment in Nigeria.
