Isa Hassan Shallangwa, General Manager of Sales and Marketing at Ajinomoto Foods Nigeria Ltd, has urged government authorities to intensify efforts in combating the circulation of adulterated monosodium glutamate (MSG) products in the Nigerian market. In an exclusive interview with DAVID AGBA, Shallangwa emphasized the need for stricter regulatory enforcement to protect consumers and ensure fair competition among legitimate producers.
What is your perspective on government’s role amid the rising presence of fake MSG products?
“The widespread distribution of adulterated MSG presents serious health risks to the public and damages the reputation of authentic brands like ours. It’s clear that government intervention is essential to maintain trust and uphold product quality. We consistently adhere to regulations and fulfill our tax obligations, so it’s only fair that the same standards apply to all players in the market. Protecting our brand’s integrity is a top priority, and that’s why we continue to run awareness campaigns highlighting the safety and quality of our products.”
What specific actions do you recommend the government take?
“I strongly call on regulatory bodies to enhance surveillance and enforcement against the manufacturing and sale of counterfeit MSG. There must be a level playing field where all companies operate under the same rigorous standards. Our business suffers both measurable and immeasurable losses due to the indiscriminate flooding of unbranded MSG products. Consumers who cannot tell the difference often lump all seasonings together under names like ‘Aji-No-Moto®,’ which undermines the hard-earned trust and brand value we have built over the years. We appeal to relevant government agencies to assist us in preserving the brand’s legacy, especially within Nigeria’s competitive market.”
