As Nigeria marks another milestone in its journey of nationhood, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has paid glowing tribute to former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd.), describing him as a symbol of unity and resilience as he celebrates his 91st birthday.
In a statement from Abuja on Monday, Akpabio reflected on Gowon’s pivotal role in steering Nigeria through one of its most defining eras — the civil war — and his unwavering dedication to reconciliation afterward. He noted that Gowon’s timeless policy of “No Victor, No Vanquished” continues to embody the spirit of peace and forgiveness that holds the country together.
“Your leadership during and after the civil war continues to shape our national story,” Akpabio remarked. “The principle of ‘No Victor, No Vanquished’ remains a moral compass for unity and healing, even decades later.”
The Senate President, speaking on behalf of his family, constituents, and the 10th National Assembly, expressed gratitude for Gowon’s continued influence on Nigeria’s socio-political evolution. He emphasized that history would remember Gowon kindly for his unwavering service to national cohesion both in power and in retirement.
Akpabio lauded the former Head of State’s ongoing advocacy for peace, dialogue, and intergenerational understanding, noting that these values remain critical to Nigeria’s growth and stability.
“Your life’s work,” he added, “stands as a beacon to leaders across generations — a reminder that genuine leadership is measured not only by power, but by the legacy of peace it leaves behind.”
Praying for Gowon’s continued good health and wisdom, Akpabio concluded his message with warm wishes:
“Happy birthday, Your Excellency. May your years ahead be filled with strength and fulfillment as you continue to inspire the nation you helped to keep united.”
