Residents of Akoka, Lagos State, have voiced their frustration over receiving only two hours of electricity daily, despite being classified as Band A customers. On Tuesday, they took to the streets to protest, calling on the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) to address the situation.
Waving placards, the protesters expressed their discontent, with one reading: “Akoka is totally neglected. Our businesses are dying daily. Save our souls in Akoka.”
In a video shared with our correspondent, a protester explained that the community had made repeated appeals to the nearest IKEDC office, but their concerns had gone unanswered. She emphasized that while residents were paying for Band A service, they were receiving far below the expected power supply.
“We’ve been moved to Band A, and we’re paying for it, but we barely get any light,” she said. “From having constant electricity, we now have just two hours a day. Our businesses are suffering, the environment is polluted, and we’re no longer comfortable. This is why we are protesting peacefully today.”
The resident added that despite multiple visits to the nearby IKEDC office, the community’s complaints had been ignored. “We are pleading with Ikeja Electric and the relevant authorities to listen to us and help save our community. Akoka has always been a vibrant neighborhood, and we want it to remain that way,” she said.
Under the Band A classification, customers are entitled to a minimum of 20 hours of power supply daily. As of the time of this report, there has been no response from Ikeja Electric.
