In a major win for Nigeria’s “Edu-Tech” ecosystem, a team of software engineering alumni from Nile University of Nigeria has clinched the grand prize at the 2026 Student Venture Capital Grant (SVCG) Competition. Their startup, Refree-G, walked away with ₦50 million in funding from the Federal Ministry of Education, solidifying its status as a top-tier innovative venture.
The Pivot to Transparency Refree-G didn’t start as a general crowdfunding tool. Originally designed to assist with refugee integration and food security, the nine-member team identified a broader systemic problem: a lack of trust in social financing.
-
The Solution: They built a scalable platform powered by blockchain technology, ensuring that every naira donated to a cause is tracked transparently.
-
The Impact: Since its launch, the platform has already:
-
Processed over ₦5 million in donations for orphanages and social causes.
-
Onboarded more than 2,000 users.
-
Gathered 10,000+ signatures for global petitions.
-
The “Collective Lab” Advantage The victory is a direct result of Nile University’s Collective Lab, an on-campus entrepreneurship and innovation hub. The founders birthed the idea while they were still students, receiving early-stage mentorship, seed funding, and the technical environment needed to move from a classroom project to a viable business.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dilli Dogo hailed the achievement, noting that the university is focused on producing “job creators” rather than just “job seekers.” By leveraging the university’s ties to the Honoris United Universities network—a pan-African education giant—Refree-G was able to scale its solution to meet national standards.
Why the SVCG Matters The Student Venture Capital Grant is the Federal Government’s flagship initiative to bridge the gap between academic research and commercial enterprise. For Refree-G, the ₦50 million grant provides the runway needed to expand their blockchain infrastructure, potentially positioning the startup as Africa’s most trusted platform for social impact financing.
