President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to deliver a nationwide address on June 12, 2025, as part of the official commemoration of Nigeria’s Democracy Day. The broadcast, set for 7 a.m., is expected to outline the administration’s strategic direction for the next two years and unveil key policy decisions.
Among the anticipated announcements is the granting of state pardons to selected individuals, signaling what may be a broader push for national reconciliation and reform.
This year’s celebration marks 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance in Nigeria. However, the traditional Democracy Day parade — which typically features symbolic acts such as the release of white pigeons and a ceremonial cake-cutting — will not take place.
In continuation of the day’s events, President Tinubu will address a joint session of the National Assembly later in the day. He is also scheduled to preside over a public lecture at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja. The lecture, themed “Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms”, will focus on strengthening democratic institutions and initiating lasting governance reforms.
As Nigeria reflects on over two decades of democratic rule, the 2025 Democracy Day celebration stands as a pivotal moment for evaluating progress and renewing national commitment to a more accountable and inclusive political system.
